

What is cryolipolysis?
In a procedure known as cryolipolysis, the fatty tissue is cooled in a non-invasive and controlled manner to trigger lipolysis (the breakdown of fat cells). The surrounding tissue remains unaffected. After two to three months, a natural-looking and noticeable reduction in fat is achieved.
How does cryolipolysis work?
Fat cells are more susceptible to energy depletion (cooling) than the surrounding tissue. A special applicator (handpiece) is applied to the defined area. Through controlled cooling, it draws energy from the underlying fat tissue whilst protecting the skin, muscles, nerves and other tissues. This triggers apoptosis (controlled cell death) in the cooled fat cells. The cells are then gradually broken down. This results in a reduction of the fat layer and, consequently, a reduction in circumference. During the treatment, the skin is monitored by special sensors located in the handpiece to ensure a stable and safe procedure. These sensors are continuously monitored by the device, and the handpiece is automatically controlled accordingly.
What happens to the fat cells?
During the procedure, so-called cold exposure causes apoptosis in the fat cells. This leads to the release of cytokines and other inflammatory mediators. In the months following the treatment, the body’s own inflammatory cells slowly and gradually break down the affected fat cells. Lipids are slowly released from the fat cells and transported away by the lymphatic system for processing. As the lipids undergo a gradual breakdown process, no harmful changes to liver function or blood lipid levels are observed.
What effect does the cold have on fat?
The lipids contained in fat cells crystallise at higher temperatures than other cells containing water. This allows fat cells to be specifically targeted by cryolipolysis. Other tissues, such as muscles, nerve cells and skin, remain unaffected.
What is cryolipolysis treatment?
The cryolipolysis procedure is a new, non-invasive method for clinically proven fat reduction. Fat cells are particularly susceptible to cold, whilst other tissues are unaffected. This mechanism of action describes cryolipolysis.
What happens during the treatment?
Together with the patient, you determine the areas to be treated. Following a medical history to answer key questions and a professional explanation of the treatment procedure, the area to be treated is covered with a special cold-protective sheet, and the applicator is positioned accordingly. The vacuum in the applicator then draws the fat deposits upwards between the cooling units. A special programme first heats the area to approx. 42°C to protect the skin. Depending on the nature of the area, you will feel a sensation of pressure and pulling. This subsides after approx. 2–3 minutes and is minimised by pressure regulation and a special massage programme within the vacuum. This ensures that the tissue can be cooled as efficiently and safely as possible. The treatment is completed after approx. 45 minutes.
What does the treatment feel like?
In the first few minutes of the treatment, you will feel pressure and an intense sensation of cold, which quickly subsides. Many clients read a newspaper or book, work on a laptop or simply relax during this time.
Will my daily activities be restricted after the treatment?
No. As this procedure is not a surgical intervention, you can resume your normal activities immediately. Redness, slight bruising, swelling, tingling or numbness may occur in the treated area; however, these are only temporary symptoms that will disappear within the next few days.
